A thief broke into a Tesla in California, stealing a cat and a toolkit

Surveillance footage shows the suspect moments before stealing a cat and toolkit from a parked Tesla.
Authorities in Los Angeles County are searching for a suspect who was caught on camera breaking into a parked Tesla and stealing a small cat and a toolkit, according to local law enforcement.
The incident occurred in a parking lot in the city of Torrance earlier this week. Surveillance footage released by the Torrance Police Department shows a man in a hoodie approaching the parked electric vehicle just after 3 p.m. He appears to use a tool to shatter the rear window before crawling inside.
Once inside the vehicle, the man quickly grabs a pet carrier containing a small gray tabby cat, along with a red plastic toolbox. He then flees the scene on foot.
The vehicle's owner, who asked to be identified only as Jamie, told Bead the cat — named Diesel — had been recovering from a vet appointment and was asleep in the carrier. The toolkit had been left inside the car after a home repair job.
"I'm still in shock," Jamie said. "Diesel is more than just a pet — he's part of the family. And I never imagined someone would break into a Tesla for tools and a cat."
Tesla’s Sentry Mode captured several clear angles of the suspect, whose face was partially visible beneath a black mask. Authorities are using the footage to identify the man, and they are asking the public to contact Torrance PD with any tips.
"The theft of any pet is a serious crime," said Detective Maria Ortiz, who is leading the investigation. "We’re pursuing every lead and are hopeful the cat will be returned safely."
Police say pet thefts — especially involving cats — are rare but not unheard of in Southern California. This case is drawing increased attention because of the unusual combination of stolen items and the vehicle involved.
Jamie has posted flyers and offered a $1,000 reward for Diesel's safe return. As of Friday, no arrests have been made and the cat remains missing.
